Dr. Arzoo Hassan is a computational physicist, research scholar, and science leader whose work sits at the intersection of cutting-edge materials science and real-world impact. She holds a Ph.D. in Physics and Chemistry of Materials from Peking University, Beijing, China-one of Asia’s most prestigious research institutions and a Master of Science in Physics from the International Islamic University, Islamabad.
With over four years of postdoctoral research experience spanning three continents, Dr. Hassan has built an exceptional research profile in first-principles Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations, specializing in the interfacial physical and chemical properties of two-dimensional materials, heterojunctions, and next-generation energy storage systems. She has held research positions at the University of Alberta (Edmonton, Canada), Shenzhen University (China), and currently serves as a Lecturer at PIEAS (Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences), Islamabad, one of Pakistan’s most prestigious institutions.
Her research contributions include 20+ peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals including Advanced Functional Materials, ACS Applied Electronic Materials, ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics, and Physica Scripta, spanning topics from biosensors and DNA nucleobase detection to potassium-ion batteries and 2D materials in space. She serves as a Senior Scientific Editor at Materials Today Communications (Elsevier), managing peer review for computational materials science manuscripts, and is a peer reviewer for journals including RSC Advances, ACS Omega, and Springer Nature’s Journal of Computational Electronics.
Beyond her research career, Dr. Hassan is a committed advocate for STEM access and education. As Co-Founder and CEO of WEmpower Pakistan, she built an international non-profit organization supporting women in STEM, organizing the WEmpower Research Conference 2020 in Beijing, the Conference on Materials and Sustainable Industrial Development (CoMSID 2022) at NUST in collaboration with SCME, and multiple seminars and workshops across Pakistan and China.
At IWISTER STEM, Dr. Hassan leads the organization’s vision and operations drawing on her international research network, her years of mentoring emerging researchers, and her deep belief that access to quality STEM education can transform lives and communities.
